I just bought The Orange Box, after I installed it, then had to go back uninstall it, change the drive, install it again.
IT'S DECIDED TO TAKE 100000000000000000000000000000000 YEARS TO UPDATE.
Not only is it taking forever, it's downloading at 1.6kb.
This isn't fair.

Oh wow. Good luck playing it before the heat death of the universe.

It's this kind of stuff that keeps me away from PC gaming. I like just being able to play as soon as I insert the game disc (note, not everyone likes mandatory 5GB installs Capcom!)

Now it's not downloading at all?
WHY CAN'T I JUST PLAY IT!?!?

Its karma. That's what you get for being an arsehat.
I kid, I kid.
Or Do I?

I can't remember how long Orange Box took here, but it wasn't very long (even on dialup). When I bought HL2 on its original release day, it took six hours of Steamification before I was allowed to start the game.
For me I like to just let it go overnight while I sleep so you don't worry about it.
But the same thing happened to me when I bought my Wii last year. about 1 and a half hours boy was I exited when I heard the 'Ding!' when it was complete I was like 'Yes TP here I come'.
Yet I haven't actually finished Tp lol.

Dare I ask... what if you don't have the internet?

Then the game wouldn't realise it needs an update.

Well then surely you wouldn't be doing anything as silly as buying single-player games, would you? </valvelogic>
Really though, these days, the set of people that both play big-name videogames and don't have an internet connection is surely pretty tiny.
Then the game wouldn't realise it needs an update.
Welllll...that would be true if you could even install it in the first place: installation of Steam games can't complete without being online. One-time online verification is Valve's replacement for keeping the game disc in the drive while you play the game.

Thanks for the informative answer. That said just because I have the internet doesn't mean I always have the internet.

True, but you only need to be connected to install or update things, not to play.

*Pats JemaKnight on the back*
It's probably quicker to buy a new PC, lol.

When I got the orange box (beta), my housemate had already downloaded it (which took about 6hours or something). So I got him to backup the files using Steam, and then put them onto disc for me. That way it didnt take nearly as long for mine to install (drop files onto computer, run steam backup on mine...) and it didnt kill our download limit.
In saying all of this... I really should backup my TF2 files and put them onto a fresh dvd!

If you're referring to DMC4, I've heard the install takes litte time, and removes loading new areas and cutscenes, sounds alright to me.
And Jemaknight, if it starts downloading again, leave it overnight and while at school, it might pick up speed, and you might actually get to play it.
Unless there's other places to download it from? Which there may be.
Poor JK. The truth is, Steam sucks (http://aussie-nintendo.com/blogs/blogsploitation/2008/01/14/an-apt-title-steam/).
Try deleting the clientregistry.blob file in Steam, try restarting your internet or re-installing Steam itself. I've had nightmares with Steam as well. I can only sympathise and say "stick with it" as the games themselves are brilliant, even if it takes you 60 years just to play them for the first time...

Well, I figured it out.
It didn't actually install the games from the DVD for some reason, and Steam was attempting to download the entire things from the net.
Odd, but it only took 30 mins to install once I figured it out.
