It's probably a great waste of money in the end. Although I'd be tempted to buy Mr Bean's Holiday on HD-DVD just so I had it. Not that I'd be able to watch it. Mmm, pointless.

i dont believe its a total waste of money if you intend on buying a dual hd/br player in the future.

Everywhere there should be a "price crash" because they need to get rid of their stock as it is now obsolete

Its far from a waste of money. A lot of these films will be months to a year away for release on BR, and when they do arrive you will be paying $40 for em which in no way will be superior to the HD-DVD versions...

if you have a HD-DVD player, go for it IMO

I want to buy at least 1 HDDVD, despite me most likely never getting an HDDVD player. Just because they'll be gone soon and it'll be like owning a beta tape, cool, but out of date.

It is a waste of money considering there is no future for the thing

Mate of mine bought the 360 HD-DVD add-on yesterday for 50 bucks and has it connected to his computer. He is buying a bunch of HD-DVD movies for only 10 bucks each. He bought it as he is taking advantage of its price of the movies.

It all really depends. Firstly I don't imagine dual format players are going to hang around, with HD-DVD dead the added work in making BR players dual format probably won't be worth it meaning that you need to keep your HD-DVD player around forever. With the quality of current consumer electronics I'd put ten years on the hardware before it dies, after that you are left with coasters.

That is unless you remux them onto BR discs. I'm not sure about the mandatory AACS dealy (probably a load of crap as it'd kill Sony's HD camcorder market) but when you consider the cost of writable BR discs (even DVD9 cost heaps) that seems like a huge waste of time also.

One thing that I just realised is that a good chunk of the cost of a cheap DVD players is the lisence fee to the DVD consortium. There is no doubt a similar fee on Blu Ray. When BR's sucessor comes out are we going to have to pay three sets of lisencing fees to play both new and old movies?
