Once I am making a bit of money and get a PC for myself I am thinking about getting my own internet plan becasue the family one is quite poor. I am considering Internode and I like the plan. i have one or two questions though.

This one maybe stupid there is an establishment charge of $129 which I will need to pay to get the phone port in my room to use the internet. The question is will I be paying a monthly fee or anything like that for the phone line on top of the plan fee or is it just the initial $129?

I don't know much about it, but I am guessing you will be, isn't that Line Rental?

Best place to ask for internet related info in Australia :)

Your post isn't very clear, are you replacing your families current internet connection with a new one, or are you getting your own private internet service?

If you're getting your own private internet connection, yes you would have to pay line rental as they'd need to instal a new phone line. If you're replacing your parents current service with a Internode, then no, as they'd already be paying line rental.

I am getting my own line. My dad doesn't want to switch becasue of his optus email account. I found the plan on whirlpool but didn't see anything about line rental on there.

I may of found a solution as the way I have at the moment I am most likely going to have to pay line rental.

I was going to go for...
512 / 128 kbps 5GB for $39.95 but I would most likely be paying $20-$30 of line rental

So my solution is...
24576 / 820 kbps Naked ADSL2+ 5GB for $59.95 and apart from the modem and installation I dont have to pay for anything extra including line rental.

Also data is shaped which is cool.

Is there anything you think I have overlooked

Man, a 5GB limit for $60 really, really bites. What's your family's current plan? If you're willing to pay $60 a month for your ADSL, why not offer to pay some extra to your parents and upgrade to a faster Optus plan?

Also, it's may have.

This covers the phoneline rental as well. A lot people do realise that the price of net plans don't include line rental and you are usually paying an extra $20-$30.

This plan I don't need to pay for it and it is ADSL2+ so I am going at ungodly speeds and $60 isn't too bad when you look at their regular ADSL2+ plan and you are paying line rental on top of it. This is a cheaper alternative. Also if I wanted 10 gig it is only an extra 5 bucks.

This plan would be for my own computer in my own room. The family computer is on an Optus plan of 300mb (600mb off-peak) and it is a bit crumby as I can't do much. And you are thinking that we could upgrade to a better plan and just get a wireless network but it isn't really that convenient as my folks don't like having the computer left on all night so I would be only be able to have it on at certain times making it inconvenient for myself.

I may get that unless someone can recommend me a better alternative plan. just remember though hat I will be paying line rental for myself so it will be an extra 30 bucks or so.

I think I have found a better option

http://www.exetel.com.au/a_plan_pricing_adsl2_naked.php

is NonPhoneA...
A) Worth its money
B) Better than the one I wanted originally (looking at it it seems to be)
C) is there anything that I am overseeing (I don't want to make any telephone calls so it should be alright)

lol, Naked ADSL2+

Looks like the advertising on this site is finally working

As for an additional line, you will need to pay line rental. You could always upgrade the existing to another optus ADSL plan

That's what he's already tossing up between. You don't need to pay line rental for Naked ADSL 2+, because you don't need another line.

From what I can see VanAce, that Exetel plan is head and shoulders (value-wise, at least) above the Internode plan.

Depends on what you want really.

The Exetel plan certainly is better value for downloading, where as the Internode one would be better if enjoy all the value add services they provide.

Internode have their free radio stations, a huge online gaming network, mirrors of pretty much every major application and file you can think of, and a ton of free content on top. Their service desk is regarded as the best in the industry, and the quality of their network is second to none. Go with Internode if you're interested in some of the free services they provide their customers, are a heavy pc/console online gamer, will make good use of the um-metered content they host, and stability and performance is a primary concern. I use to work for Internode too, and have been a customer of theirs for over 5 years, so I can certainly vouch for their quality.

On the reverse though the Exetel plan is way better value for your money, especially if you're a P2P user. If you're primary use for this internet connection is downloading P2P files along with streaming videos ect of youtube, this is by far the better plan. The higher download limit would certainly give you more flexibility and allow you to enjoy a high speed internet connection more. I personally would hit a 5gb download limit within a few days. However the biggest problem I see is that Exetel charge excess fees of $3 per GB if you exceed your monthly download limit. You'd better be careful not to go above your limit of you could be up for a lot of money, especially on a high speed service where it'd take you no more then an hour to rip 1GB down. At least with the Internode plans you don't have to worry about excess charges. Not to mention Exetel have an off peak/on peak downloading system, which further complicates and limits you to what times you can download and how much. As a final note their overseas back haul isn't as good as Internode's, so if you're going to be playing Nintendo Wii games like Smash online with people in Europe and America etc, Internode would give a better performance.

All up I'd personally go Exetel. So long as you're fine with having on peak and off peak download limits, potential excess charges, and potentially higher latency when playing online games internationally.

If you're cool with all of that, sign up with em.

$3/ GB isn't too bad compared with $120 /GB some charge for. The 8GB should last me the whole month as I am generally not a pirate and I have to the 48 GB to fall back on if need be.

Also Exetel has some game servers now. Not as many Internode but ones for popular games eg, CoD4
