I know, seems a bit weird that I'm asking about books but I decided I want to try looking into reading some paperback this year. I always thought the idea of detective fiction or mysteries would be cool, but my knowledge of the genre begins and ends with Sherlock Holmes so I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some more modern books in the genre (preferably within this decade) with some cool characters and such.
I don't know about modern, but two authors you should definitely check out are Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler.

James Patterson.
His books are really, really good.!
I've read his continuous Womens Murder Club stories, which are really good reading.

'The Black House' (authors: stephen king and peter straub).
The book is a kidnapping, and a retired detective getting back into the game. this is more of a fantasy/detective type book though. you REALLY REALLY need to read 'The Talisman' (same authors) beforehand to really appreciate it.
Otherwise:
'Lost Boy, Lost Girl' (peter straub)

I would have said Sherlock holmes, they are good books.
Although, I read The Chase by Clive Cussler recently, that was good.
You have to read Hardy Boys, probably more young adult but if you want a good easy read cant go past it.
We had them in my primary school.
I remember one about mummies or something....

The Diamond Brothers series by Anthony harowtiz are good, but they are more early teens.
Still, they are worth a read.

"I'm getting such a clue"
"I had such a massive clue I nearly shot clue glue all over Frank"
Sorry. After South Park, I'll never be able to read the Hardy Boys...
Appeal Denied by Peter Corris. Just read it, it was pretty decent. Thinking about writing my own after studying Detective fiction.
The rest of Corris's Cliff Hardy series should be good, too.
