Did anyone watch the Gala last night on T.V? If so, what was the name of that American couple who constantly sang and danced for like 7 minutes straight (yelling some was a horse)? That skit really grew on me and I'm eager to watch it a 2nd time to understand it.

Oh man you are out of your mind. That comedy duo was shit. I found the Gala pretty disapointing compared to other times. The best in show were the Umbilical Brothers, their act was hilarious.

LOL, hell yeah I am! When I first saw it I thougt 'wtf' and just didn't get it. But eventually ticked my funny bone when they just kept repeating the same line. I thought the best act was by Woodley - that was the one act that made lol loudly during the skit.

You knew it was coming, but at least he made it look like a convincing 'accident'.

Stephen K Amos was the best act I saw, as he nearly always is. I stopped watching shortly after that; most of the rest were a bit wet.

Frank Woodley was just slightly too predictable to make me laugh, other than his intro, which was good. The Umbilical Brothers did what they normally do, which is to start off really well, and then take their act too far with chainsaws and cliffs and Terminator references and the like. Nice enough ending, though.

Kristen Schaal and Kurt Braunohler were actually quite good, but the funny, not funny, not funny, really funny, not funny, funny cycle in repetition jokes is hard to rely on (especially when the TV cast cuts off your act), and I was in a "not funny" section when it stopped, unfortunately.

I seriously think that they wouldn't have been funny even if they DID NOT repeat their stupid song. Their whole skit did not go anywhere and I could not find any reason to why they did that shit in the first place. If someone were to tell me a legit reason for why they were funny, please share it, I would very much like to hear.

I usualy find the Melbourne Gala to be pretty crap, and last night was no exception. However, there were som great peformances. Stephen K Amos is always a riot to watch, as are the Umbilical Brothers. I also liked Arj Barker's observaton of the 160 gig ipod :) .

The worst ones that come to mind were Rove and Will Anderson *shudders*

What does Rove hope to achieve by saying "ladies" in that awful tone. It was funny the first time Rove but give it up now.

Sure, it wouldn't have been funny without repetition, but they did repeat it. Repetition jokes usually aren't funny in singular instances, but that's fine because they don't have to be.

For example, when Sideshow Bob steps on a rake and it hits him in the face in whatever Simpsons episode it was, is that funny? Maybe if you're six, I don't know, but not for me. For me it's when he does it again and again that the joke kicks in. It's when you see the extreme improbability of a field full of rakes that you "get it" - you break out of the "joke" and into the "meta-joke" where you see the scene's intentional construction by the writers and artists as part of the text. The repetition then invites you to respond to your last response - it allows the very fact that something that shouldn't be funny is being performed, to become a reason to laugh at it.

If it doesn't work for you, that's of course just fine too, but there are definitely "legit" reasons to enjoy such jokes.

My humor needs reasons for jokes to be funny. That is just me.

Wow, and nobody else does? No, it's not just you, it's everyone on the entire planet, Mr. Sarcasm. People don't just laugh for no reason, or you'd just hear random laughter 24 hours a day.

It's not that people laughing at these jokes "don't have a reason"; it's that you don't like or don't understand (often much the same thing in comedy) the reason. Which, again, is fine, but you have no grounds to act like the smarter one, especially if you're not even going to explain what a "reason" is.

Watched the 2nd half of it last night (wouldn't pass up South Park and Drawn Together even if I have already seen those episodes before) and was pleased to see the Spamalot snippet at the end.

What was the name of the black guy who was talking about homosexuals intimidating heterosexuals? I thought he was funny. And so was Arj Barker and Frank Woodley.

I too was thinking of the same thing when reading this thread - I haven't seen him or heard before (from memory) in any other TV/Radio programs, and I thought he was pretty decent.

I missed Arj Barker, but not too bummed I guess. Stephen K Amos was great though, and which comedian sang the song 'Banging' with his little synth? He was definitely my favourite of the night! :P

Rove was vomit-inducing though - the cross promotion was blatant and not even funny...

David O'Doherty is great every year. Him, Stephen K Amos, Mike Watson and David Byrne were the standouts for me.
Also, Fiona O'Loughlin is absolute garbage each and every year. Get some new material please! Bah.....

The EXACT answer I was going to give.

I found it to be quite funny overall, most of the acts were generally funny, apart from a select few, and with that "horse" repetition skit, it would have been pretty annoying, but it was funny towards the end, you have to admit it. I heard the actual act at the Gala went for ages. Does anyone know whether that is true?
