View Full Version : Sidescrolling Zelda?

Yes I know that Zelda 2 was sidescrolling, but that was probably a good example of how NOT to do a sidescrolling Zelda.
Yes there were also 2D sections in the GB/GBC Zelda, but that wasn't really anything mindblowing.
However what I'd be really interested to see is what a fully fledged 2D Zelda would turn out like. I was just plaing Castlevania CoTM on GBA and went through an area with a fair deal of very well thought out Zelda-esque block puzzles, which got me thinking - could Zelda work in 2D?
I think yes, sure it may or may not be as good as the current formula, but it could also give a fresh twist and allow for some totally new puzzles that involve height that just don't work so well in a traditional Zelda enviroment.
Thoughts.

For platforming, we have Mario, and for sidescrolling adventure stuff we have Castlevania and Metroid. I'm sure it could be done, but I think it'd largely be a sprite swap of things that already exist.

I had that thought too, but in my experience while almost all platformers and other similar games have puzzle elements, they are often very simplistic in nature. CoTM was the most complex I've seen yet and that was only a small portion of the game and not overly difficult.
I guess Zelda could take it to the 'next level' so to speak, but it would run the risk of feeling generic too.

Quite a few Zelda games have had 2D sidescrolling elements, like you say, but I think I'd like it to stay that way. Fully fledged probably wouldn't feel like Zelda. But, I'd still be eager for something new!

I think it could work but if it takes like a Wonderboy 4 perspective. For those who don't know Wonderboy 4 (On mega drive) is a sidescrolling RPG and is one of the best games I've played. It is Silmilar to Zelda(gameplay mechanics) in many ways and has the most unique overworld system(not like Zelda 2 but more Side Scrolling).

It could work, but it would have to be original and not be like Zelda 2. If they give it good puzzle solving elements and good gameplay it might just work out quite well.

I wonder how link's moves would work out, the bomb and bow would translate well, but I could see the boomerang being less useful.
Also sidescrollers have unique mechanics, would Link get a double jump? Typically link didn't have many powerups, mainly items, would that need to change?
EDIT: I just found this DS homebrew game

Sure it is generic and so forth, but it does at least look the part.

A 2d Zelda would be interesting simply because there hasnt been one for ages, Maybe with the VC Nintendo could make a small 2d Zelda for dedicated players. I dont think it would cost too much, would it?

Um Minishcap was a 2D Zelda. Well perhaps on VC it could work.

I found the side scrolling parts of 4 swords adventures boring, there is only so much link can do moving sidewars

2D as in sidescrolling, as per the topic title. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

..well nintendo have said that Twilight princess is the last zelda game we'll see in that form.. so you never know what they'll do next. I doubt it'll be a sidescroller though. I think a first person adventure on wii.

I was replying to what Capt Charisma said. The way he was talking was that he meant any 2D Zelda.
Anyway dont like the idea too much.

I'm really interested to see what they do with the single player mode in SSBB. Its going to be a good game, I mean when you improve the 1P and multiplayer modes, and add online, how can it possibly be worse?

I think it would be good, i can imagine the sword action, like in Kirby for the GBA (the mirror one) you could pull off sme suck combos

I think it would work...I've played a couple of good fan made sidescrolling Zeldas myself but...Zelda is set in a diverse world. How would you get that feeling in 2d?I say..add sidescrolling and roaming elements and voillah! Like they should make boss battles sidescrollers, it would add alot of strategy to the battles.

I've never actually thought of a side scrolling Zelda and how it would work. I totally missed out on Zelda 2. But yes, of course it is possible, but personally I think it would lose the vastness and atmosphere I love about the Zelda games. Of course I wouldn't be afraid to try a new way of playing it. Interesting idea.
