My phone of about 2 and a half years seems to be having battery issues lately. Usually, the charge will last for about 3-5 days, but last night I completely charged it, and this morning woke to find it on low batteries. I'm not sure if it's an issue with the phone reading the battery (the other day it jumped from 1 bar to 2 bars of batteries) or whether the battery is finally dead. For those interested, the phone is a Samsung E720. I can find out more details if you tell me where to look.

Also, how long are phone batteries meant to last for?

I unno, but over 2 years is a great run. My phone is about a year old and the battery lasts for a week on a single charge. My phone doesn't have bluetooth or a camera to waste power.

Whenever I unplug my phone it turns off. It's not even portable, I must've got ripped.

Same. I make like one call just about and it neally dies on me.

Had mine about 4 years or so, it would usually last several days (basically unused :P) though now will only last a couple, generally. A long phone call is usually enough to make the phone drop out. Still works fine though. Way better than the battery life of my DS >_>

My phone really sucks, it lasts like 5 days on a charge, going off texts, if I call people but, it dies after like 40 minutes.

Bite the bullet and buy either a new battery or a new phone. 2 years is great for a phone's life.

It's strange though, this morning, I awoke to it vibrating because it was low (0 bars) on batteries. So I turned it off, turned it back on later and now it's been on 1 bar for the last 7 hours.

Phone batteries generally lose their charge time as they get older.
So.. yeah, buy a new phone or buy a new battery.

What my friend's phone was doing was worse, it would lose all but one bar of charge within an hour, but last indefinate amounts of time on the single bar!

I agree. Phones should be used for just calling and texting. No games, cameras and all of this crap, just call and txt.

No way. Having all that in a phone means less devices.

I'm charging the phone now. I'll update you guys on how it goes and how long it lasts, hopefully in a few days, and not in a few hours.

I just took my phone on holidays for a bit over a week and didn't even bring my charger, still haven't put it on the charger and its only now reporting 20% charge.

It typically goes from full charge to ~50% in about a day then stays on ~50% for ages, so the only way to know how long your battery lasts is to fully charge it then see how long until it dies.

I'm now not sure if its an issue with the battery or the phone, because when I finished charging it on Saturday, it was completely charged. Then on Sunday morning, it said low battery. So I turned it off, then turned it back on and then it was back to 1 bar (out of 3). It's now been on 1 bar for a day, so I'll see how it goes.

I might try letting it completely run out of batteries, and then fully charging it up. See if that makes a difference. If not, I'll need to buy a new battery. Any recommendations of where to buy one (apart from the internet)? Can I get my phone shop (Optus) to order one in?

I'm not sure about Samsung but some phones these days are brand-locked for replacement batteries.

I have a feeling that it might not apply to Samsung, since I saw on ebay from a reputable seller, a generic battery brand for my phone. That doesn't confirm nor deny anything but it does imply that it probably doesn't matter. Anyway, thanks for the help so far TSPhoenix.

To update my situation, I recently bought a new (third party) battery for my phone. It worked for the first couple of times, however, I fully charged it last night, and this morning, I awoke to find it down to low battery. So I put back in my old battery, which last time was on low battery and hadn't been charged since, to find that it was now on 56% charge.

Does this mean that there's something wrong with my phone reading the charge on the battery?

Also, I'm going to return the new battery. Any tips on how to do this, since they opened it for me when on the receipt, it says it will return within 14 days if it's been unused?

Never buy a third party phone battery. Sure it's cheaper but you just experienced is why people shouldn't buy them.

As for returning it, say it wasn't what you were expecting it to be (battery life). Their store policy means nothing since it isn't law. You are entitled to getting what you paid for (a crap battery but that's not the point).

So is it more likely that it's something wrong with my phone, or something wrong with the battery?

The battery.

Thanks, I'll try looking for a battery then. I'll probably need to look for a Samsung repairer, which will probably be the best place to buy from.
