Default Dragonball Kai

In a nutshell.
Dragon Ball Z is going to be condensed to around 100 episodes (yes the entire 291 episodes).
With redone animation and better quality all around.

That really doesn't show how it will look well. I expect it will look better.

100 episodes is far too short imo.
Basically it will go from fight to fight, no filler at all i think.

well that's better than having 5 episodes in a row of a character powering up and having flashbacks
should be ok, but i wouldn't bother watching it after having wasted so much of my life away watching the full series

The "100 episodes" thing is still an unconfirmed 2ch rumour. It HAS been confirmed, however, that they'll be trimming it a lot and keeping it more in line with the manga. The animation's not being redone either, they're cleaning the film and remastering it (proper remastering, not 'fiddle with some filters and let it run on auto' like FUNi's season sets). They're re-recording the audio though.

I'm looking forward to this, DBZ with better pacing will be fantastic. I'll miss a few things that're likely to get cut (RIP driving lesson episode), but on the whole it's a fair tradeoff and that stuff'll still exist in the original version of the series.

There's about 100 episodes worth of content in it, if you cut out the utterly stupid amount of filler. Good riddance.

It's kinda like how they could cut Naruto down to about 30 eps :P.

But seriously, I'm glad they're gunna be cutting out lots of filler crap. I just came to see Goku bashing some guys head in, not him talking about how he's gunna do it for 5 eps.

It just isn't Dragonball if it isn't long with a painstakingly suspenseful story.

(NB: I use that term loosely.)

Here's all the info i know of
Quote:
The upcoming issue of Weekly Shônen Jump confirms that the "refreshed" version of DBZ for Japanese TV (you know about this, right?) will in fact be called...
Dragon Ball Kai

As pointed out on Kanzentai, the kanji 改 means "renewed" or "revised". I personally find it interesting that, if they were going to give it a new name in the first place, they didn't go with something like Shin DragonBall Z, as said kanji has popped up in a variety of products over the years (like Shin Butôden and Shin Budôkai, so perhaps that alone would have led to too much confusion). The "Z" appears to be dropped completely, but this will indeed be the DBZ TV series (at least for now; there has been no word on any other DB series receiving a similar treatment).
There is not a whole lot of additional information, but you will notice that the two screen shots in the image are indeed semi-cropped, similar to FUNimation's "faux"-remastered boxsets. Keeping in mind that Toei's promotional materials for the "Dragon Box" versions of the movies are all shown in 4:3 despite the products being 16:9, we should not yet jump to any conclusions. At the same time, it will/would be incredibly disheartening to see Toei go such a cheap route. However, we did receive word from our buddy Wasted Wisher way back when that:
it seems that TOEI is going to be re-drawing some scenes from Dragonball for broadcast on high-def tv. The touch-ups will include some re-done background art (most likely to broaden certain scenes for widescreen)
Will it be a combination of cropping and actual extension, as opposed to FUNimation's sets which did not create actual new footage? I suppose we will have to wait until April 5th...!

Well, it wasn't called Dragon Ball Z in Japan, it was just 'Dragon Ball', along with what we know as 'Dragon Ball'. So, I'd imagine it might be renamed to Dragon Ball Z Kai here or something anyway, if they release it at all.

Am I only one that feels this isn't needed? I guess they are trying to reinvigorate the franchise by catering to a new generation of kids not entirely familiar with the series, Only the DBZ hardcore will go back and watch this again.
