Mortal Kombat looking to avoid a fatality

Posted 2nd of March, 2009 at 08:46 pm by Infernal Monkey Infernal Monkey is online now

Having filed for bankruptcy last month after struggling for so many years, Midway is looking to sell off their biggest IP; Mortal Kombat.

While the series has been underperforming in sales for quite some time now, it's still a very recognisable name. It's not yet known who will be looking to get their hands on it. Just think, if Capcom were to buy the rights, we could finally see that Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat crossover everyone wanted back in... 1993?

Midway's 'Wheelman' game starring Vin Diesel has been purchased by Ubisoft. Other titles Midway had in production such as Gauntlet DS are still in limbo, along with their vast back catalogue of IPs. Will the Paperboy ever deliver again?

For now, we should all enjoy some Cooking with Scorpion.

So much for that complete reinvention of the Mortal Kombat universe. The worst part about this is that whoever picks up the rights will not do anything to reinvent the series and instead continue the trend of unbalanced characters, konstant misspellings and gore that was dull by the time I hit puberty.

Its such a shame that midway went under, i always had respect for them and i still love Mortal Kombat so much. Lets hope that someone decent picks up Mortal Kombat such as SEGA, Namco, or even Activision. I own every Mortal Kombat game ever released and i hope the series continues the way it has been going for years. R.I.P. Midway i always loved you!!!!

Nintendo should acquire the rights. Because the Mortal Kombat realm needs more friendship finishers.

Or Mario Bros./MK crossovers :\

Underperforming in sales? MKvsDC has shipped 2 mil, with the last gen MKs selling no less than 1 mil - with Deception selling 1 mill within just a week. It's Midway's pathetic management that got them here, not MK's strong, consistent sales.

I do hope Ed Boon retains the team because the 3D games were some of my favourite fighters to date. Bring back the karnage, Boon!

For the franchise's sake, I'd like it Ubisoft or Activision didn't buy it out - it would mean the franchise would turn into a total cop out.

Either Ubisoft, EA Games or THQ will acquire the rights to this. I'm hoping Capcom for reasons mentioned in the article.

I would love to see Capcom buy it. Streetfighter vs Mortal Kombat is a good idea.
It worked for Mario and Sonic. Rivals do work.

They need a fighting company to pick this up one that's good.

If all else fails on a Capcom buyout I would love to see Namco take a chance, some of the MK fighters could fit perfectly in Soul Calibur. Mortal Kombat vs Soul Calibur would fit better cause they're both Button mashers in a way.
Probably end up being Namco. They'll need something other than Star Wars next time lol.

It's sad we've had to see a company like this fall apart especially after 15 years and being one of the big inspirations of violence in video games today. Maybe I should do a tribute.....

I'm trying to work out how Mortal Kombat lost touch with its audience I was thinking when it went 3D. But I actually liked Deadly Alliance and Deception. Maybe Armageddon opened up more of a dent than we thought.
Or maybe it just got repetitive.

I really don't want to see this franchise die it was once one of my favourites. And I don't know what I would do if I couldn't brag about Kung Lao ever again.

Don't worry about paperboy I can see Nintendo or Sega buying that.

Maybe I should start a company and buy all those broken franchises i'll be able to rise through name recognition. And because I have passion I'd love to bring them back to their old form and why they were so good in the first place. Then with the money saved I could hopefully buy Golden Sun and make my Golden Sun 3 Alex's Revenge.

For the love of god dont let it fall into the hands of EA, they might turn it into a boxing game with the gloves off.

I wouldn't be worried if EA picked it up - they allow a lot more creative freedom and originality than what they used to. It's only Activision and Ubisoft that would be cracking the whip on cash-ins.

I loved Deadly Alliance, Deception and Shaolin Monks. I still occasionally play the later two. They were shining examples of entertaining violence and how gore can increase a game's appeal in today's games.

I'd assume most of the core team would remain doing the franchise, just under a different name. I'm with you guys on Capcom - Capcom vs Mortal Kombat would be a wet dream. An absolute wet dream.

Hey guys. Street Fighter vs Mortal Kombat will never happen because it would just be too embarrassing for Capcom to have anything to do with Mortal Kombat.

I reckon Capcom could bring it back to classic.

They could even get it a little bit more skilful with the moves and such.

And it be great if they gave this to the guys who do the Resident Evil series. We all know they would have no fear going that extra mile with the gore. They might actually help it out.

Mortal Kombat wasn't all that bad like I said Deadly Alliance and Deception were quite good.
My favourite however is still Mortal Kombat 2. That definitely had that dark and gloomy side to it. And was the introduction of my favourite fighter.... Kung Lao.
Mortal Kombat 3 took it that little further. The whole uppercut through buildings and such. And more characters and different types of characters. Not to mention I also liked seeing an unmasked Sub Zero.
And that Train Stage fatality i'll never forget.

Gah, I just remembered how brutal the CPUs in Mortal Kombat can be.

Well, I wonder who will buy the rights...

Why would it be too embarrasing? If MK was bad, it would be terribly embarrasing for Street Fighter to lose market and money to such a franchise and be in competition with it.

People like me love MK more than Street Fighter.
