The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks announced

Posted 26th of March, 2009 at 09:37 am by Slash Slash is offline

Satoru Iwata's keynote address at the Game Developers Conference yesterday, almost made up for Nintendo's woeful e3 display last year. A new Zelda game was officially announced among other things.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks is coming and it's for the DS. It looks to be retaining the aesthetics of WindWaker, just like it's predecessor Phantom Hourglass.

Trains eh? Was anyone actually expecting this? Whatever happened to the new Wii iteration of Zelda that was hinted at? Little else is known of the game at this point in time, but expect more tidbits of information as the GDC continues.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
is expected to release later in 2009.

Another Zelda game for the DS might appear to be a rush job on the surface, considering Phantom Hourglass was release over a year ago, but development on Spirit Trains makes a lot of sense to me. Not only did Phantom Hourglass generate a significant amount of sales against a trend of franchise decline, in part due to the DS's popularity, but the Touch Screen controls implimented into Phantom Hourglass were seemless and intuitive. Here's hoping they can iron out a few flaws from Phantom Hourglass in this installment, although trains instead of sailing invokes a large amount on confidence at this point. :p

Wouldn't it just be grand if Nintendo was just lying to keep the fans quiet, and that Spirit Trains is really their new Zelda Game they were mentioning? After all, the DS Zelda team was apparently working on this "new" title... so you can count on many taking this possibility the wrong way. I look forward to enjoying the imminent wave of fanboy anger across the World Wide Web; good days indeed. :D

I hope it has the option of being able to use the d-pad and buttons as opposed to just touch screen controls.

I'm expecting this to be released in Q4 2009.

The game should be excellent if it isn't ruined by anything similar to the Temple of the Ocean King. Phantom Hourglass was great, but going through that temple was one of the most boring chores I have ever had to go through.

Was that a phantom helping Link?

This is awesome. I loved Phantom Hourglass, and this is better than a new game for Wii, as I like taking games like Zelda with me. And DS has been neglected of First-Party core titles for a while. Sure we have Rythm Heaven but that doesn't really compare to something like Zelda.
And no one should complain that this was announced rather than a Zelda for Wii. At least, not because they promised that one was coming for Nintendo's Little White Box, because they never promised such a thing at all- Miyamoto assured us that a new Zelda game was being worked on. He didn't say for which platform.
So I'm happy.

Sorry Nintendo, you can replace the boat with a train, you can actually have Zelda appear as a princess in this one, but this is still coming off as a redo of Phourglass (showing off being able to draw boomerang paths has totally been done now!)

As for the people complaining it's a "rehash" of Phantom Hourglass, don't be stupid. It uses the same engine, but so it should- Phantom Hourglass wasd nearly flawless in its engine and if this game ends up being as good as it, then I'll be content.

Yes phantom hourglass was easy.

Just going back and fourth to the dungeon was annoying a little bit but fun since you had to run away from the phantoms.

I wonder what new items will appear. We've already seen the wind blowing thing i think you spin the stylus round and round then once you stop the wind stops. Or i think it's just automatic.

Since like it looks more touch that item. And when toon link was vsing that giant bug he had to throw it far and i don't think nintendo would be making us blow for ages.

Blowing could be a second option in the game but i think you just aim then throw.

The problem here is you're acting as if your opinion is fact. Things would be different if you said "I'd rather pretend they don't exist" instead of just flat out saying they don't exist because you don't want them to. It's like the people saying "I don't like what happened when Hitler killed all of those Jews, so the holocaust never happened". If attitudes like yours are accepted and adapted by everyone important historical events would be forgotten.

The engine isn't so much the problem, its that this game pretty much is Phantom Hourglass with the boat replaced with a train. Of course this view is rather silly as well Zelda games haven't really radically changed the formula since ALLTP. Then again people said OoT was a rehash of ALLTP so this a fight best left unentered.
