Box art roundup (22nd - 28th of March)

Now with more depression!

EUROPE / AUSTRALIA

... Can we make Russell Grant Aussie-Nintendo's mascot? Please? It's almost like his face is a gateway into another dimension. Aside from that hilarity, this is... ugh. Probably the crappiest week yet. Why do publishers have so much trouble with the box art for pet-based games? That woman seems to have problems trying to smile; even the dog doesn't know what she's trying to do. Plus you can see a cat and dog trapped inside the badly designed building. They're probably going to die. Way to make your target audience cry, JoWood.

I'm not really too sure what the 'Clever Kids' games are, I have a feeling they're just like those barely-edutainment discs the Sunday papers used to give away. Click on something, watch a badly compressed video, learn exciting facts. "Did you know a spider has legs?" "Click on the spider" *Click* "You did it!" *End credits roll* Who would want to learn anything from that washing machine robot anyway? Me, that's who.

That poor Aqua Panic! fish better watch out it doesn't crash into the giant USK rating there. DJ Star's box seems to be missing something, but what? Ah.

Much better.

AMERICA

Starfy's happy! Yes! I thought for sure NoA would make him angry like Kirby. In fact, he looks even happier than the original Japanese box art. Let's hope he doesn't notice those Imagine games. Imagine Boutique Owner, more like Imagine Going Out of Business. What the hell is she doing? "I would like to buy these chocolates" "OKAY, JUST LET ME OPEN THEM FOR YOU AND PLACE THEM ON THE COUNTER" "But!" "NOW I'M IGNORING THE CUSTOMER IN THE BACKGROUND AHUAHUAHUAUHAHUA"

I praised Overlord's Wii box art last week, because... well, I did. The DS one? Not so much. It's a bit lazy, considering all they've done is cut the dude out of the background. Phantom Brave's popped up before, but NIS has made a few changes to it, adding the 'We Meet Again' subtitle and working more into the background. It's pretty great. Of course, anything would look great sitting next to that.

Party Pigs will probably be the top selling Wii game of the year. But really, what the hell? Did Destineer purposely go out of their way to come up with the most unappealing video game ever? Seven mini-games? Seven? AND PIGS. I have nothing against playing as pigs, as the Wario games have been pretty outstanding, but these ones? No, no, no, this is all wrong. I feel sorry for the kids that are going to get this for Christmas. The Munchables' box is nicely done. I have a feeling the game's going to be completely ignored though, just Dewey’s Adventure. Poor, poor Dewey.

JAPAN

A Witch's Tale
Happy Star Band

Simple DS Series Vol. 48: The Saibanin: hitotsuno shinjitsu, mutsu no kotae

Yep, Japan still hasn't got Table Tennis yet - it comes out in June. I don't recall the 360 version doing too well over there, but I'm sure at least one person will buy it. Then they can feel special. Arc Rise Fantasia's box is great. The Internet has already compared it to Tales of Vesperia's Japanese box design. That's it, Mcdonalds is going to sue MMV for having seven barrels. The judge will dance naked as he delivers the verdict.

Happy Star Band will be localised as Rockin' Pretty in the US. Just uh, just in case you were interested. 505 Games is also going to publish it over here as 'Diva Girls: Making the Music', with different characters. Oh man, I'm so bored.

D3's close to 50 Simple games on DS now, that's worthy of a cake or something. They've got a long way to go if they want to beat their PS2 record of 130+ titles. The Saibanin: Very Long Name is their very own Phoenix Wright style series. And holy moly, A Witch's Tale lives! It was announced back in 2007, then sort of vanished. Just like I intend to do right now! Except it's 2009, and there's time for Klax.

Um, why did they need to make that Astrology boxart so... hilariously creepy? It's a joke box, right? ... Right? :(

Huzzah for Sta(r)fy! Please bring it to Australia, Nintendo. Oh, and the Imagine series needs to disappear. At this rate, there's gonna be more Imagine games than there are Mario. ;_;

Oh my God, what the hell?

Someone needs to take Nintendo to court over their quality seal in the PAL region.

They obviously had foresight in the United States by making it simply a 'seal' over 10 years ago.

Oh thank god. Finally. I've been following the development of Pet Pals when it was first announced about a week ago because that's how long I bet it took to make this piece of freakin crap. This is the reason my PS3 owning brother laughs at me in contempt. Not happy Jan!!!!!(whoever she is).

The Nintendo Seal has never had anything to do with how good a game is, or isn't. It has always just been there to show that the game is in good working order and will run properly, and the game isn't an illegally published game.

One can only dream of a world where the Nintendo Seal of Quality was, in fact, a Seal of Quality in Gameplay.

Infernal does raid there quite a bit, so he's bringing the neogaf to aussie. I don't mind - neogaf is hilarious.

Is it an actual series of games or is it just the title? Also are they Japan's equivalent to shovelware?

Not true.

After the video game crash in North America, Nintendo endeavored to review all games on the NES and weed out the crap ones for fear of backlash from retailers if a game didn't sell.

I still can remember, word for word, what it used to say;

"This seal is your assurance that Nintendo has approved and guaranteed the quality of this product."

Now you can interpret those words any which way, fact is Nintendo DID check all games prior to the SNES release in 1991. Then when they realised it was definitely not economically viable for them to do so (or developers began to leave in droves, either one works), they dropped the quality component and in America reworded the phrase to suggest that such a product was only made or licensed by Nintendo. Such wording wasn't changed in the PAL region until much more recently, obviously a long time after any quality control checks were still in place.

Rocking Pretty actually sounded kinda half-decent, even if it's not suited for people like me. They shouldn't have butchered it as DivaGirls. Now it just sounds like shovelware.

I don't get how they made them so freakin' ugly! D: I want to see their quality assurance team.

It's pretty much just a title. The Simple games are by a variety of developers on a tight budget. Most are worthless shovelware, but some decent/good games sneak through every now and then. If one of them becomes a hit, it'll usually see a few sequels.

Here's a list of all the Simple DS games so far. They cover just about everything, from first person shooters;

Pikmin clones;

To uh... this sort of stuff. =x

Ah yes. Not only that, that's the whole style they seem to do in most Tales games in one form of artwork or another. Still, it is a nice box art.
