No ExciteBots for Australia

Posted 14th of July, 2009 at 04:02 pm by Infernal Monkey Infernal Monkey is online now

The future just got a little bit less exciting. Speaking with Kotaku, Nintendo Australia's Rose Lappin confirmed there are no plans - at this stage - for an Australian release of ExciteBots, the crazy sequel to Excite Truck.

Much like the limited release of Punch-Out!!, it apparently comes down to a lack of interest, and in this case, the fact that the game also did pretty terrible numbers in America (not even a Wii Wheel bundle managed to save it).

"I know there’s a group of people who want it, but at our minimum [stock order] it’s probably too much for us to carry. I know in the US there’s a lot of that stock around,” she explains. "We’ve got to make that evaluation. We’ve got to try and support our consumers where possible, but unless we can sell the minimum we need to bring in, that makes it very difficult."

Of course, there's another factor coming into play, that ExciteBots doesn't even exist in the PAL format (no European release). Nintendo Australia managed to release Animal Crossing on the GameCube a year before other PAL regions, so maybe, just maybe, if enough noise is made, they could do the same for ExciteBots. Haha, who am I kidding?

An insufficient promotional campaign in the USA has undoubtedly contributed to the poor market reaction Excitebots; the name itself is strongly dissociated from the classic Excite Bike series. In fairness though, the game was practically doomed from the start for several reasons:

- Reactions amongst the game savvy were very lackluster upon the game's initial announcement, as a short development window raised significant concerns about the game's polish. Nothing was done on Nintendo's PR half to counter these misconceptions.
- Many Wii consumers already have a high quality racing game... Mario Kart Wii. People identify with Mario far more readily than Excite "Bots", so with absolutely nothing to differentiate the title, it's possible many people chose to shrug the game off as poor value for money.
- Even for those that were able to identify what the game was, relatively poor perceptions of Excite Truck's multiplayer mode would have hampered Excitebots sales to the expanded audience. Why would you risk such a gamble when the first wasn't any fun with friends?

None the less, such news is highly disappointing for those that were keen in purchasing this game, especially considering the vast improvement in fun factor over Excite Truck. Importing is thankfully a viable option for those willing to go down that path, however, so not all is lost.

I'm not so fussed about this not being released in Australia as of yet, but I'm keen for news on Another Code. = | I hope they have plans to release that here.

Same old story about Wii games. With the amount of shovelware available the casuals will not be able to differentiate this game from the shovelware, and the hardcore gamers who own a Wii will see this as inferior to other racing games, including Mario Kart Wii.

It's a shame good games like this suffer.

Damn, this was one of the few Wii games I've been looking forward to. This is disappointing news.

Do we know whether Europe will be getting it yet?

With all you saying that you were "serious looking forward to it", were any of you actually going to definitely buy the game?

For reals. It would depend on how much cash I had, but I would have bought it sometime within 3 months of it's release or so.

Absolutely. I had so much fun playing EXCITE! Truck with my brother on his copy of that game, this would have been a day one addition to my collection.

This news leaves me feeling much less than excite. At least with Punch Out I can import a copy that's guaranteed to work on my Wii no matter what without the need for software or softmods that Nintendo will try to block every chance they get.

What is the world coming to when Nintendo are afraid to release their own games. I guess this means we'll never get the likes of Another Code R and Mario Super Sluggers or Soma Bringer down here.

What a joke! I've been holding off buying Excitetruck lately purely because of this game! It better get a PAL release somewhere so I can pick it up eventually :/

Now to see what happens to Another Code R...

Even if only a quarter did that still good. I may have gotten it when it hit $30 or thereabouts, again better than nothing.
