Wii price cut supposedly confirmed during phone conference

Posted 19th of September, 2009 at 11:32 am by Lucario Lucario is offline

Nintendo representatives have supposedly revealed to several retailers through a phone conference that the Wii price drop will take effect from Sunday September 27th. The US price is said to drop down to USD$199 which works out to roughly $230 in Australia. Nintendo are still yet to confirm the new price but with several retail sources all stating the same thing it really seems as though it is actually going ahead.

With the price cut of the Xbox360 several months ago and the new cheaper PS3 model released last week, it was only a matter of time before Nintendo needed to make a move of their own to ensure the Wii continues to stand strong amongst its competitors. Right now only America seems to be guaranteed the new cheaper price but it shouldn't be long before the rest of the world follows.

What price do you think the Wii should sell for in Australia?

I think $250-$300 would be a sturdy price for the Wii. Since the PS3 and 360, in some ways, have many more capabilities, they'll likely go for the more powerful console. That is, unless the next best thing when it comes to performance saves them $150-$200. And then you get all the other awesome stuff that the Wii is and that the other consoles don't have.

You'd think the new Australian RRP would be $300, but I wouldn't be surprised to just see $50 knocked off.

According to Nintendo Australia, $50US = $100 (and $20US = $50).

Watch them drop it by $10.

And remove the Wii console from the package.

So I'm guessing this will mean $750 in Australia for a new Wii?

$400 to $250ish? Yikes. I think $300 is a more logical step down.

it should be $250, there is no way the wii is worth $300.

All consoles should be under $400 IMO.

It's about time they cut the price, although how much?

I doubt they'll cut it down to $199 like they did with the GameCube, then again they weren't selling many...

Currently the cost price of a Wii console is $AU334 to most retailers, but thus is from the launch of the Wii. Considering this and that it has been out of nearly three years, the Wii could possibly fall to $A299.95.

However, knowing Nintendo Australia and the current GFC (global financial crisis for those playing at home), it's more likely to only be a $50 price drop here, $349.95.

Well it was confirmed by several retailers all this week but not Nintendo themselves.
