nVidia win contract for Nintendo's next handheld
Posted 15th of October, 2009 at 05:00 pm by Lucario
Though the Nintendo DSi was only released this year, news on Nintendo's next handheld have emerged on BSN via a "confidential source". Nintendo are working with graphics card developers nVidia for their future portable gaming console, the company developed the Microsoft Zune HD Player and has helped create several smart phones. The next-gen handheld is said to feature a major boost in power and will be able to support Wii standard graphics whilst still having a low battery consumption, they also plan to make it backward compatible with Nintendo DS titles. Nintendo's future handheld device is apparently expected to be released late next year in Japan but until Nintendo make an official statement take this for what it is.

This is the kind of upgrade I can get behind, if it is in fact true. Although doesn't having a handheld with Wii standard graphics kind of undermine the Wii itself? Could a HD Wii be closer than we think?

A TP looking game on the DS would be awesome; I guess it means the graphics for Nintendo's next home console should be that much better than the Wii, right? That is if they don't want console and handheld graphics to be comparable.

I just bought a freakin' DSi, not too long after my DS lite and not too long after my DS.

Has anyone considered that they may be considering placing a Wii label on the new handheld? But then again with the DS brand selling so well that doesn't make sense :P

Personally this is stupid if true imo, I mean what's the point of making DSi exclusive games or releasing the DSi in general if it is going to have a life span of two years.

Sounds good, I hope it is true, although I am a bit worried about what something like this might cost.

Seems a bit like a load of hype and false promises to me, I think people are overestimating the power of the Tegra.
One of it's achievements is running Quake III at 35fps. The graphics chip in the ipod touch(PowerVR SGX I think) is capable of running Q3 at 40-60fps.
I may be interpreting this wrong, but it seems like a load of crap. Unless Quake 3 is on par with wii graphics :P

This sounds pretty awesome. Of all the companies to get a contract with in areas of console graphics and processing power, it's Nvidia. Good job, Nintendo.

OH SHIT. This is going to be awesome. I might not even buy a DSi after all but if a spirit tracks DSi does come out my toonish senses will force me to get it.
The DS already has alright graphics imo for a handheld imagine this. Just wow.

That's just a bad game so don't use it as an example of the Wii.

GCN-level handheld games would be more than satisfying enough for me.

Anyone upset about this because they got a DSi has to realise that this is so very early in the life of the system design. We wouldn't be seeing this until NEXT christmas at the earliest, if not longer (the only "confirmation" of it coming out then is from an analyst, and we know how brilliant they are). We wouldn't be seeing the system out until at least a year after it officially debuts with a Nintendo official holding one, and screens of games. After all, they'd need to give 3rd parties time to make games for the thing, and unlike the DS lite and DSi, it will be a significant upgrade.
All we've got now is confirmation of who is going to make the chip.
My bet is the next DS is effectively a DSi with two touchscreens, DS/DSi/DSiware compatibility, and maybe an analogue stick of some form, with of course the huge graphical upgrade.

Interesting as ATI has been doing all the Wii stuff.

Isn't late 2010 a bit soon? The DSi was only released in March.
