The UK's Official Nintendo Magazine has an absolutely enormous four part reader Q&A up, so naturally there's some information worthy of being retyped! On the other side of the internet!
Playing through in single player, the game takes about six hours to complete, but that's just from speeding through and not bothering to hunt down all the Star Coins. It's apparently much harder than New Super Mario Bros. on DS, and pretty much on par with Super Mario World.
The main level design doesn't change from single player to co-op, they're the exact same stages no matter how many people are playing. One player has to be Mario, even if only two people are playing. No hot Toad-only action.
There is however a 'Coin Battle' game for multiplayer, with new levels exclusive to this mode. Here players compete for the most coins (shock). Stages are retro in design, with the likes of World 1-2 from Super Mario Bros. and the single screen from the original Mario Bros. arcade game.
Also, most important of all - drums are added to the background music when riding Yoshi. You can check out the whole thing here.

I wonder if by "completed" he just meant getting from the start to the finish, and whether that involved completing every single level or not. Does anyone know if it's a linear thing or there's a branching level structure kind of thing going on?

If you can finish in in six hours its clearly not going to be as hard as we all thought it would be. I never thought of SMW as a particularly difficult game. I just hope that its a bit more vertically diverse than the DS game was, I loved how SMW actually was more than once screen high.
How long is SMW? All I know is that it takes me like 30 mins to finish the shortest route but I have nfi how long going the long way would take.
Also I really hope the DS games' multiplayer mode is in as its one of the best multiplayers ever.

That sounds good. Me and and my friends are all going to play this from start to finish in co-op

That's awesome. Personally, as long as it doesn't become a repetitive, predictable yawnfest, a game can never be too long.

Well lets say SMW is 6 hrs, if this has as much content and is of equal difficulty then 6 hrs sounds right.
I was thinking it'd take longer because its harder and you'd die more. Then again maybe 6 hrs is for someone whose been developing the game and is already pretty good at it.

I don't care how long it is, as long as its a Mario side scroller I don't care.

If you know all the secret paths, isn't Super Mario World then relatively short?

This game shale be great.
Not going to be a straight away buy but I am looking forward too it. The Co-op sounds interesting, although most the game I will spend by my self.

This is sounding better by the day. Quite excited which makes a change for me. The 6 hours thing I cant really see being a problem. Like maybe if I played it non-stop all day the first time I played it I could possibly finish it (so thats at least 12 hours) but I doubt Ill knock it straight over in 6.

The first time I beat SMB3 all those years ago was around 5 hours (one sitting), so 6 hours sounds pretty much on par considering that.
Damn I'm looking forward to this. :D

$100 RRP.
At the moment Toys R Us looks to have cheapest price at launch, $69.

6 hours doesn't so bad to me. I mean, with the amount of times I willingly play through a level or two of New Super Mario Bros. on DS when I get in the mood for a little bit of sidescrolling action, this game is looking simply better and better for the reasons I want it. That's without the multiplayer considered too, which looks to be a blast.
I was under the impression we could play as a single Toad. A little dissapointed with that. :(

Considering how happy playable characters make people, and how easy they'd be to make for a game like this, its odd you can only play as Mario.

Multiplayer looks like it'll be a lot of fun.
Pretty chuffed that Australia is getting the game first.
