QLD Parliament opens petition for R18+ classification

Posted 20th of November, 2009 at 05:54 pm by Infernal Monkey Infernal Monkey is online now

While there have been plenty of well supported online petitions in regards to the ongoing video game classification issue, here's one that might actually go somewhere! The Queensland Parliament has set up their own e-petition about changing the system to allow an R18+ rating.

Quote:
TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House that the Classification of Computer Games and Images Act 1995 is currently out of step with the wishes of the electorate.

Your petitioners, therefore, request the House that it be amended to permit computer games to receive the R18+ classification when they have been refused classification under the Commonwealth Act.
If successful, it could very well cause a chain reaction. Only Queensland residents can sign the petition (Click HERE and follow the steps). But please, spread the word.

Thanks to Seanus for bringing this to our attention, and to Jema for passing it on!

I don't understand. I had so far assumed this was a necessarily federal issue, because if the states can each make individual laws allowing R18+ ratings, why has anyone outside South Australia been complaining about Michael Atkinson blocking the idea?

hmm and is it the attorney general that decides on the individual law?

I'd find it hilarious if each state brings it in individually.

However I don't think its that simple, I think the board has to recognise the R rating before a state can decide whether they'd allow it, like if the R rating was passed by the AG, SA can still refuse it to be sold, kinda like X rated movies being allows in Canberra and NT but no where else.

Although I could be wrong, I haven't really read up on it, and most of the stuff I have read up about the classification board and that is kind of rage posts at no R rating for games.

Nah, this means to show how much support this has from Queenslanders and the Queensland government, in order to make changes on a federal level... Seemingly, at least.

So that means only QLD will have an R rating?

No worries, Infernal. Anything to spread the word.
For those confused about what effect this will have, here's what someone else posted on GFaqs that sort of explains the current situation...

The classification guidelines are created at a federal level, but it is at the discretion of the states to introduce enforcement legislation. Therefore QLD is able to introduce an R rating for video games - just as they have decided to ban X rated films and category 1 & 2 publications.

The co-operative classification scheme is merely an agreement, it does not legislatively prevent each state from introducing it's own classification legislation.

So like someone mentioned above, it's similar to X-rated material that can only be purchased in Canberra and the NT. If this gets through, only QLD will have R rated games (which will hopefully change)

Man am I glad to live in Queensland. I'm sure this'll be a success, and hopefully other states and territories will follow.

If the QLD gets 18+ games, then it would have a great tourism boost.
