Remember back in the day when Nintendo couldn't make enough Wii consoles? Well the opposite is happening at the moment as the Wii's sales heads down hill. Nintendo have informed Japanese companies Mitsumi and Hosiden to reduce production since there is no longer a demand for the Wii any more, even with the recent price drops. It seems Nintendo have marketed the Wii to everyone they possibly could in the last three years and now there aren't many people left in the world who still don't own the console yet want one. Cutting back the number of Wii's being manufactered has created a loss in revenue for the two Japanese manufacturing companies, add this to the Wii's declining sales this year and they've both lost over 50% in net profit.
It seems the Wii is facing some tough times especially when faced with two powerful and cheap competitors who are both expanding their install base. Nintendo more then anyone will know when the Wii's time is up and they'll be ready to introduce a new console which will hopefully carry on the success of the Wii.

Pfft the Gamecube was fine and the Ps3 - well we all thought it was doomed. Nintendo will just drop the price further and release better games soon enough. Remember that year when we thought the Xbox 360 was doomed? I think it was 2007.

So.... WHY is there still stock shortages in Australia? As a retailer, Nintendo still are having issues filling our orders. This is true for Wii accessories (Remotes especially) also.
They may be having the same issue as Apple with their iPods - 98% of the population of Australia own an iPod (Oct 07-08 figure). Obviously when a product reaches saturation point, the responsible thing to do would be cut production... but they should show Australia a bit of love...

I don't know if this is good news or bad news. I'm really eager to know what Nintendo's next console will be.
