In an interview with Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, Iwata has surprisingly revealed some details regarding Nintendo's successor to the DS.
The new handheld will feature a high resolution display and a motion sensor to capture the player's movements. When asked about its rough release date, Iwata merely commented that "[the] DS saw its highest sales in North America in 2009." Basically, they're in no rush.
Shifting to the Wii, Iwata suggested that the market "has started to accelerate again", largely thanks to the incredible success of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. He confirmed that the Wii's new, highly anticipated Zelda game will launch before 2010 comes to an end, and they'll also be announcing some games for the mysterious Vitality Sensor peripheral in July.
