Iwata talks about Nintendo's next handheld, confirms Zelda Wii for 2010

Posted 6th of January, 2010 at 07:36 pm by Infernal Monkey Infernal Monkey is online now

In an interview with Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, Iwata has surprisingly revealed some details regarding Nintendo's successor to the DS.

The new handheld will feature a high resolution display and a motion sensor to capture the player's movements. When asked about its rough release date, Iwata merely commented that "[the] DS saw its highest sales in North America in 2009." Basically, they're in no rush.

Shifting to the Wii, Iwata suggested that the market "has started to accelerate again", largely thanks to the incredible success of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. He confirmed that the Wii's new, highly anticipated Zelda game will launch before 2010 comes to an end, and they'll also be announcing some games for the mysterious Vitality Sensor peripheral in July.

Zelda 2010?
That sounds pretty soon, considering how long twilight princess was in development for.

The addition of that smooth portrait of Iwata; sheer brilliance.

Zelda Wii to be released before the end of 2010? I'll take that as a Dec 31st 2010 release until otherwise stated.

The Ds's successor sounds pretty interesting, although I hope the Motion censer isn't over used.

Zelda in 2010 (Q4, I'm assuming, Japan only too) is the most interesting thing here IMO. I didn't think it'd be out till Mid-2011 at least, with Galaxy 2 being the big title for the 2010 holiday season. Cool.

how exactly are motion controls on a handheld meant to work? you wave the system around? doesnt seem practical to me (only other way that comes to mind would be to have some kind of peripheral- which starts making it less portable).

Come on, you gotta admit. Yelling "OBJECTION!" was the only way to play when no one was around right?

Flailing your arms around only makes it 10x better.

Regardless of whether he's referring to an Australian release or not, the news on Zelda in 2010 has made my day.

All those crazy historians thought the mayans were predicting the end of the world... but maybe 12/12/2012 is the date that the new DS comes out, or Wii, or Zelda!? It better not be Zelda cause that's flippin late!

Oh goodness, if they make an iPhone-type handheld I might not buy it... There is always the issue having to shift your viewpoint accordingly to see the screen properly when you move the damn thing.

On the other hand, Zelda in 2010 seems like a realistic date, looking at the previous Zelda release history. And it will make me almost pee my pants in excitement...

Nintendo have probably been working on the next Zelda for a while but keeping it a mystery. I think we'll probably get it this year too. I mean it's Zelda. We'll probably get it around the same time as Japan.

As for the new handheld, motion control is so 2007

Nickelodeon promised me actual reality, which would supposedly blow virtual reality completely away. As of yet, that has seen more delays than Duke Nukem Forever.
