Mystic Quest Legend heads to Virtual Console

Square Enix's 'simplified' Final Fantasy adventure Mystic Quest Legend has been rated by the OFLC, pointing towards an upcoming Virtual Console release.

The Super Nintendo game was developed with the Western market in mind as an entry-level RPG. The battle system is toned down a tad, and players can save their game at any time, rather than desperately trying to reach a save point only to get killed by an enemy and hurl verbal abuse at the TV. Speaking of which, enemies are also clearly visible in dungeons - doing away with random battles.

Released in America and Japan as part of the Final Fantasy brand, this was the only game in the series to get a PAL release on SNES. But even then they dropped Final Fantasy from its name over here, opting to just call it Mystic Quest Legend. I remember being intimidated by the thick guide book Mattel (before Nintendo Australia even existed) bundled with it. So much so that I bought Plok! instead. Fascinating story.

Oh, and Mystic Quest Legend has some pretty awesome music.

I remember playing I think the GB version of Mystic Quest and trying to find the Final Fantasy in it. My quest ended in tears, but seriously, I sad face'd it.

Although it was a dumbed down (final fantasy?), it was still a decent, underrated game.

Whoa! Seriously awesome.

This is by, a long, long way, my favourite Final Fantasy game... I think it's a really underrated RPG.
'Shrine of Light' from the soundtrack would be very close to my favourite gaming theme.

I remember playing this after Zelda III and thinking that it was a steaming pile of crap. Now, I'm sure I'd like it better.
