Nintendo Japan have today confirmed to Bloomberg that the Nintendo 3DS will launch in Japan this October with the price and official release date to be revealed in September. Nintendo have acknowledged that the handheld console is in the final stages of production, a supportive library of Nintendo 3DS games would also need to be close to the finish line. Kid Icarus: Uprising is expected to be one of the release titles to show off what the Nintendo 3DS has to offer including its 3D capabilities.
Who knows what the fate for us English speaking countries will be, let's hope history doesn't repeat itself. The original Nintendo DS launched around the beginning of December 2004 in the US and Japan but wasn't released in Australia and Europe until February and March 2005 respectively.
Update: It would appear GameSpot were quite sloppy with their translation and Japan may not actually receive the Nintendo 3DS in October. Take this with with a grain of salt at the moment until we hear more from Nintendo this September.

The original DS was launched in December 2004. Because 4 is double of 2 and the DS has two screens.

Yea I've updated the news post, I think GameSpot got over excited and some information got lost in translation. A big site them them usually doesn't get stuff like this wrong.

Honestly I don't expect it to be out till 2011 the way they are talking about it.
But yeah Japan will get it first, everyone else will have to wait. On top of translation they actually have to make the hardware and its a lot easier to do that for a medium sized market like Japan than a large one like the US or Europe.
