Best platformer i ever played, close behind it being Yoshi's Island. The music was just amazing for me, especially the water level. So soothing and relaxing and the way it just brought you into the world of DKC.

For me, I actually think Donkey Kong Country 3 was my favourite.

My favourite is DKC for the levels and DKC3 for the bright levels lol.

I think if Nintendo made another DKC game then they could somehow use NSMBWii as a stepping stone. Imagine 2 players both controlling Donkey and Diddy at the same time :)

Music and graphics hold up well. Everything else............not so much. I hate the game's design today. Save points, checkpoint destinations and a lack of Funky Kong airports suck.

But good review. For feedback, 7-8 minutes is too long for a retro review. You seem to be waffling a little bit on a particular or trivial aspect, but I suppose that comes with experience. But you were entertaining enough and delivered it relatively strong. What I like about you is that you didn't try to shoe-horn humour or bad taste in your review for sake of "trying" to be funny - ie. IGN AU (apart from Cam Shea).

I thought Rare was the developer and that Nintendo published it.

I found the video entertaining enough myself, on the chat though the general consensus was that this seemed more like "A guy talking about a game" for 7 minutes rather than "reviewing a game", if you get what I mean. Still, I appreciate the effort you're putting in. Keep it up.

Personally I liked DKC2 the most. The music, the visuals, the level design... everything was pretty damn awesome. Also somebody pointed out to me that DKC2 fixed the trail and error problems from DKC (which I never really noticed before until he brought it up). In DKC sometimes you had to actually jump into death to see if there was a bonus stage barrel down there or something of the like. This was fixed in DKC2.

This.
I'm with Kabal too. It went too long for a retro review.

I'm not a fan of the black & white, but if it's just me I'll hush. =x
The sound effect that plays when it shows the score of Gameplay, etc is quite piercing. I'd suggest a different sound.

I hope you'll take this as constructive criticism. I only want to see your reviews get better and better.
Everything else was great. Much better than your last review.
You ramble here and there, and repeat yourself sometimes, but that's just part of experience.
Good stuff, Riz! Looking forward to that DKC2/DKC3 review.

Oh and DKC2 was my favourite. =]

I understand where you guys are coming from, but the way i see it, its like this... if you dont explain the game to an audience that has never played it... then all you are really saying is... "it's a good game" and the audience are after blind to the fact of what the game is... i like to tell what the game is before i give out my verdict... and as for the B/W, i can't change that.. sorry.
It's me, my style and If i do change it.. alot of the "fanboys" that i have will chew my ass out.
sorry. But as for the sound effect, i agree... i didnt know i left it that loud... ouch. sorry.
But i think i know now i'll be sticking to my own style from now on. I think i got a better response out of this review than my last

The second game I got on the SNES (after Super Gouls and Ghosts which game bundled) and it is one of my favourite games of all time. I think I enjoyed the sequel a little more though, 3 was good but my least favourite.

Sounds like your fans are deciding what you should be. Decide for yourself.
You lose fans, you gain others. You can't make everyone happy.

I still think showing gameplay > face, but if you do want to show your face, keep it to 20% of the vid.

I find it amusing that when you're talking about the music in the mine cart levels, you talk over the music the whole time that it plays, so we can't hear it.

Seems like I'm the only one who's never played DKC...

But I have heard certain tracks revamped for Brawl. Sounds pretty sweet, despite my tendency to dislike the music from the DK games.

At around 1:30, you say it's original, and then a few seconds later, go on to say it isn't original, as well as repeating points about it's graphics being eyeball popping for the Super Nintendo. That's probably my major gripe with this review.

Anyway, as for the game itself, I found it's environments were very repeating. Jungle. Mines. Treetop shanty place. Underwater. It's good, but I prefer Super Mario World.

Oh, and the "Hamser" and "Flamingo", I think are actually a Beaver and a Vulture.

I love this game and it was first introduced to me by the TV show, A*mazing. So about $100 later, I got my parents to get it for me and I was hooked. I remember being so frustrated in some of the levels and also waking up about an hour earlier, just to play it before school.

The visuals was secondary to me as it was the gameplay that I found satisfying and simple, but at the same time challenging and rewarding as new skills were taught, especially after multiple deaths. Thankfully, I accidentally discovered DK's hand slap and worked out where the banana bunches were located.

The music is fantastic, suiting the environments of which the levels were based on. Jungle Groove, Funky's Fugue, Mine Cart Madness and Fear Factory are some of my favourites, with Bad Boss Boogie and Aquatic Ambiance right up there as the others.

There were so many elements that works so nicely together, you couldn't have one without the other. The animals were a highlight, especially Rambi Rhino and Winky the Frog. The animal bonus stages were alright but detracted from the game, I thought.

Of the three DKC games, number two is by far my favourite of the three. They improved the gameplay by adding different elements and collectibles to freshen the experience but kept the core gameplay intact. And it was harder but also a lot of fun. The music is simply amazing and it was pirate themed, can't go wrong with that. Number three tried too much and it showed. It's bad when they replaced the rhino with the elephant...

The "pyramid" is actually a temple...

I understand why you have to explain the functions of the game in your review - after all, this game is sixteen years old and there is a chance that younger readers have not had a chance to play it at all. That being said, you do tend to go into a bit of hyper detail and you can probably gloss over some of the less critical stuff, I reckon. I hit stop by the time you were talking about Candy's Save Point (sorry!). But I figure it's better to tell you when you lost the audience rather then to tell you that I watched it all. Good call on it not being a unique game, but a fun one nonetheless - even though I'm a huge fan of the series, I totally agree with that on the first game.

As for the games themselves, DKC2 is definitely my fave of the series. DKC seems to have dated a LOT (even though I love it so, not just nostalgia, but due to some excellent sound and music design) and DKC3, while fun, was a bit too pastel for my liking (not to mention those Banana Birds being an absolute CONUNDRUM). For DKC2, Rare was at the top of their game - it seems like everything went right - rather than having to build a game from scratch, they could use what they already had to make a second, bigger, better game with all the ideas they'd wanted to put in the first one. Music was once again top-notch (Stickerbush Symphony, oh my!) and there were a lot of location choices that were fun and unique, not seen in other platform games - for example, a giant beehive, a rollercoaster, huge prickly thorns...). Ah, bliss.

There was a huge sense of replay value for this one, too. While DKC2 started the real trinket collecting, each item really had a purpose, rather than being a piece of fluff to pad out gameplay. Kremcoins were your reward for completing the hidden bonus levels that you discovered, and these got you access to the Lost World levels, while the DK Coins were often deviously hidden, and a great reward in themselves just for finding them. In the days of no internet, figuring out where everything was became an exciting and rewarding challenge. And fair - they weren't stupidly hidden - the game gave you fair clues as to where the bonus levels and coins were. Looking back on it now, I can really appreciate the design of the game as a whole and thoroughly recommend it to anyone who likes platform games at all. The controls are really well balanced, and the game is quite enjoyable.

Just don't play the GBA games, they look ugly as sin and don't do the games justice at all.

All the Donkey Kong Country games are a trainwreck. Style over substance if you ask me. Also another review I could pick apart for being dreadful, but I won't. Hopefully these will improve.

Also lol at Donkey Kong Land being worse than DKC, I'm pretty sure the DKL games were 10x better.

I recall reading that in the first DKL, if you attempt to jump to a lower platform faster than the game can scroll, it still counts as player death. You sure about that?

DKC2 was my favourite, mianly because I prefered the Dixy / diddy combo. this would be in 2nd.

As for the DKL games, its probably because I haven't played them for like 10 years, but i didn't really notice any difference besides the graphics :S.
